For our November meeting we welcomed Debbie Semonich who led us in a workshop of “Winter Sowing.”

Debbie Semonich has been gardening for 25 years. She learned some skills from her grandfather and mother but she is mostly self taught. Discovering winter sowing made her gardening life blossom.
Debbie works with her other love, books, at the Plumb Memorial Library. She lives and gardens in Shelton with her family.
We learned how to make our own miniature greenhouses from recycled plastic containers. We cut the top of the carton three quarters of the way around making a top for the greenhouse.
- Debbie demonstrates cutting the milk carton
- Duct tape, scissors and tiny tweezers were provided for each member
- Milk cartons, Larkspur seeds and instructions were provided for each member
Soil was provided and everyone had a chance to fill the bottom of their carton with the soil.
- Members filled their miniature greenhouses with soil
- Planting the Larkspur seeds
- Digging in the dirt
- Members filled up their miniature greenhouses with soil
- Ready to plant the Larkspur seeds

Once the bottom was filled with soil, members planted Larkspur seeds.
At the end of the session everyone got to take home their own miniature greenhouse with Larkspur seeds.
In the spring, once germination begins, the only maintenance required is making sure the containers don’t overheat and that the soil doesn’t dry out.
