ORGC Annual Field Trip: A Visit to Gilbertie’s Herbs & Garden Center

On Monday, June 19, 2017, the Olde Ripton Garden Club went on a field trip to Gilbertie’s Herbs & Garden Center in Westport, Connecticut.

Gilbertie’s is a familiar brand to local gardeners — their USDA certified organic herbs and vegetables may be found in both big box garden centers and small shops across the state.  Their site in Westport is not only a retail location, but also an active garden.  We took a tour of the gardens at the center with their gardener, Joe, who told many interesting facts about the gardens.

Gilbertie’s is a 4th-generation retail business that has been based in Westport for 90 years.  Besides their status as the largest grower in the Northeast, Gilbertie’s is known for its donations to schools and charities, as well as its lectures and classes on gardening.1

Joe led ORGC members through the main gardens and greenhouses, describing their establishment and evolution over the years.  Gilbertie’s has two greenhouses, and they plant and sell fresh vegetables even through the winter months.  The site is also home to a flock of chickens and three stray cats.

The circular garden is designed like a clock, with rays extending outward.  It is planted each year with a mix of perennials and annuals.  The herbs are grown onsite, on either side of a bricked walkway.

Everyone bought beautiful plants and interesting garden statuary to add to their gardens.  Learn more about Gilbertie’s at their website:  http://www.gilbertiesherbs.com/

Many thanks to Joyce Donnelly for planning the event!
